Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Repo2Txt runs entirely in your browser. No file ever leaves your machine — there is no server, no upload, no telemetry. You can verify this by opening your browser's network tab while using the tool: zero requests are made.

How does the tool decide which files to skip?

Three layers of filtering run in order: (1) hardcoded exclusions drop dependency folders (node_modules, target, .venv), lockfiles, and 100+ binary/asset extensions; (2) .gitignore patterns are parsed at every directory level with full support for negation, anchoring, and ** globs; (3) binary detection (null-byte heuristic) and minified detection (long-line heuristic) catch anything that slipped through.

How are tokens estimated?

We use a simple chars-per-token heuristic (~4 chars/token for English text, configurable in Settings). This is an approximation, not an exact tokenizer — but it gives you a reliable sense of whether your repo will fit in a 128K, 200K, or 1M context window.

What happens if my repo is really big?

The size boundary guard defaults to 10 MB. Once the included output crosses that limit, additional files are skipped to protect your clipboard. You can raise or lower this limit in Settings — anywhere from 1 to 50 MB.

Does it work with monorepos?

Yes. Nested .gitignore files at every directory level are honored independently, so a monorepo with different rules per package works correctly. Custom exclusion globs (like apps/*/dist/**) give you extra control.

Can I customize the output format?

The structured format (header + directory tree + per-file code-fenced blocks) follows a standard that most LLMs parse cleanly. You can also switch between Markdown, JSON, Plain Text, and LLM Chat formats in real time using the toggle in the output panel.
